When one of the largest automation companies was tasked with creating a fully automated material transfer system for a large steel mill in the USA, they came to us to build the On-Rail Transfer Cart.
This 25 Ton, 40ft long cart travels 500ft non-stop 24/7 shuttling bundles of steel from one area of the large factory to another. Bundles of steel are loaded onto the cart by overhead crane and the cart is signaled to travel, it operates on 460/3/60 power picked up from custom made stands adjacent to the floor rails. The stands also support a special bar code tape to feedback to the control system the location of the cart at all times.
We were able to design-build a very robust cart with standard Forward-Reverse Operator controls and load test it on rails prior to having the automation company add their sensors and controls. The original control package acts as a backup, should maintenance ever need to take the cart ‘offline’ for inspection and service.
A 2nd unit was completed two years later for a sister plant opened in another state!
LARGE TANK, SMALL PAINT BOOTH
One of our customers was struggling with a new product they needed to get to market. They manufactured large tanks, and their new models were getting too heavy to move around using typical material handling equipment, especially when they needed to get them into their paint booth, which is considered a hazardous environment due to the chemicals they use, so a powered steerable transfer cart was ruled out for safety. They also needed to take the tanks from one building to the next outdoors down their loading ramp.
We were able to develop a 25,000lb capacity towed transfer cart with easily removable or relocatable V-decks and safety tie-down anchor points, and utilize a standard battery powered tugger with hydraulic lift for moving the cart around. This resulted in a 2-wheel trailer effect that offered very tight turning radius, safe load handling and the ability to paint large tanks and other products without double and triple handling.

Quite a few years ago one of our customers came to us to review their floor after they had one of our steerable transfer carts in operation for several years. They were finding that in some instances where operators were making tight turns the swivel casters were ‘struggling’ and sliding on the floor and in some places the surface of the floor was ‘chewed up’.
An extensive review led to several conclusions. Firstly, our carts were built extremely stiffly, so depending on where the load was placed and how flat the floor truly was, we often had 1 wheel in the air, putting a lot of loads on the other corners. Secondly, regular swivel casters, although rated for enough tonnage, experience wear in the rotating bearings, causing extra friction.
These two primary factors caused us to revisit how we designed our steerable transfer carts; we now utilize only the best quality casters, thoroughly field tested in very tough conditions, and we implement ‘bogie systems’ to evenly spread the load to the wheels and the floor – reducing the chance of floor damage and extending the life of the casters immensely.

Recently one of our long-time customers in the architectural glass and display market came to us with a challenge. They wanted to be able to better utilize their overhead crane systems and new laser tables without sacrificing floor space.
Using our experience with manual transfer carts, we were able to provide them with five (5) rolling tables, each 3T Capacity aligned along their back wall with. Utilizing and inverted V track for one of the wheels and a steel plate on the floor we were able to provide carts that could be pushed by hand, even with 5000lbs on them! The customer was able to offload bundles of sheets of different gages and sort them onto tables located between two laser cutting machines, allowing for improved storage abilities, eliminating forklift traffic, reduced handling times and eliminating scratched/damaged sheets.
